A fun challenge for kids would be to see how many animals they can spot. You’ll leave the forest, walk along a field and across the dam of a small pond. Then you’ll re-enter the forest, which is known as the “Enchanted Forest.” Take it slow and look around and you’ll see why. There are very few places where you’ll be unsure of where to turn, but when you are, look for the white blazes. Part of this hike was on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which stretches 1,175 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. We found such a hike in Elkin, just over an hour north of Charlotte, straight up I-77.
Additional Scenic Drives
Architecturally, the historic Town of Elkin NC has kept the visual feel of an early- to mid-1900s main drag. This hike might not compare to the ruggedness of nearby Stone Mountain State Park. But it’s definitely worth a walk, and warrants Elkin Parks and Recreation’s inclusion on the list.

It’s best known for the historic Reeves Theater, great microbreweries, Yadkin Valley wineries, and the US-21 Road Market. One of our favorite things about the town of Elkin is the sixth segment of the Mountains-to-Sea hiking trail, including the picturesque Carter Falls. It’s one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Western North Carolina. However, for me, the most notable feature is the Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail, which follows an old railroad line. In addition to offering up quality beer and live music, the venue is also home to the Reeves Downtown School of Music. This non-profit educational program is designed to keep the SW Virginia music scene’s flavor intact. The Reeves is a renovated 700-seat movie theater that originally opened in 1941. It reopened in the last decade as a music venue/cafĂ©, with a great selection of local and craft beers on tap. The arrival of Highland Brewing, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Oskar Blues breweries made Asheville NC a hotspot for beer lovers.

For the most colorful hike and clearest water conditions at Carter Falls Elkin NC, we suggest warmer months and not after periods of intense rainfall. The water turns brown in color when it has rained a lot, so keep that in mind, too, when planning your visit. For a diversion, you’ll also meet a Skull Camp Trail spur about a mile into your hike. Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery welcomes you to start your Carter Falls hike from their trailhead.
